Celebrate the return of this seasonal vivarium, which is filled with over 500 hundred live butterflies. The creatures flit about in a magical summerlike environment, surrounded by tropical flowers and lush vegetation in 80-degree temperatures. It’s a perfect exhibition for a cold fall or winter day (and equally nice in spring, of course).  Through May 2020.

Inside a 1,200-square-foot vivarium, a freestanding transparent structure aflutter with activity, visitors interact with butterflies as they stroll along a winding pathway surrounded by tropical plants and vibrant blossoms. Powerful halide lamps shine down from the ceiling, simulating the sunlight that streams through a rain forest canopy. In the vivarium, monarchs, zebra longwings, paper kites, and other butterfly species flutter among people and plants. Colorful educational displays outside the vivarium explain the life cycle of butterflies, worldwide efforts to protect diverse habitats, and variety of butterfly species in New York State.

The North Fork Animal Welfare League is proud to announce the launch of a capital campaign to move into a new state-of-the-art animal shelter. The new shelter will serve the homeless and lost dogs, cats and other animals of the Town of Riverhead. Help us reach our goal. THE RIVERHEAD SHELTER Campaign.   Please visit

THE ISSUE  The Riverhead Town Shelter, which has been under the management of North Fork Animal Welfare League since early 2013, is a decades old building in great disrepair, located next to a garbage dump and waste processing plant. Sadly, the shelter is poorly lit and ventilated, and lacks sufficient space for the animals in our care, as well as for staff, volunteers and visitors. Further, there is no space to care for cats, though many are in need of a safe home until forever families can be found.

The AC&C Cage Comforter Program enlists volunteer sewers to make small comforters and toys for the kittens, cats and small dogs in our care. Our animals love their comforters!  Visit
The comforters not only ease the stress of our homeless animals, they also help to ease the transition when the animals are adopted, because they take their comforters with them to their new homes.
If you can help by sewing or donating please email [email protected]
Also: We are currently in need of: towels, blankets, canned kitten food i.e. Purina or Iams Pate, and cat litter. You can drop-off or mail your donation to any one of our Animal Care Centers.

Maddie's® Spay/Neuter Project NYC

New York City Five Boroughs
Spaying or neutering makes good sense for animals as well as for their humans  and guardians.
Now New York City residents who have a valid Medicaid card can have their dogs and cats spayed or neutered for a special low price: $10 for cats and $20 for dogs.

The Mayor's Alliance and the Veterinary Medical Association of NYC have launched Maddie's® Spay/Neuter Project NYC. The project, made possible by a generous grant from Maddie's Fund, helps to reduce the number of homeless cats and dogs in NYC by decreasing the number of unwanted canine and feline pregnancies.
Anyone who lives within the five boroughs of New York City and has a valid Medicaid card can have up to a total of six cats or dogs (or a combination of cats/dogs totaling no more than six) spayed or neutered each year for a special low price at participating veterinarians.
If you qualify or if someone you know qualifies for this important life-saving program, act now to take advantage of this opportunity.
If you have questions, e-mail The Mayor's Alliance. [email protected]

State University of New York at Fredonia
Release of the Book that Inspired the Animal Rights Movement By Fredonia Professor Emily VanDette

State University of New York at Fredonia 280 Central Ave, Fredonia, NY 14063 (716) 673-3111

State University of New York at Fredonia Department of English Professor Emily E. VanDette has published a critical edition of “Trixy,” a 1904 novel by the best-selling American author and women’s rights activist Elizabeth Stuart Phelps.

The novel exposes the ethical issues surrounding the practice of vivisection, or scientific experiments on live animals.

In “Trixy,” contemporary readers can trace the roots of the early animal rights movement in Phelps’s influential campaign to introduce legislation to regulate or end this practice. Dr. VanDette’s introduction places Phelps’s animal writing in the context of social reform campaigns and literary trends of the day, while also demonstrating that Phelps’s protest writing was ahead of its time.

In addition to restoring Phelps’s novel, which has been out of print for over a century, VanDette’s edition includes the animal rights story “A Dog’s Tale” by Phelps’s contemporary, Mark Twain, as well as additional writings by Phelps. VanDette also includes endnotes to provide historical, biographical and cultural contexts that acknowledge the importance of the novel.

“Trixy” will be released by Northwestern University Press on Oct. 15, and will be available for purchase at the Faculty Student Association Bookstore on campus. It is part of Northwestern UP’s Curbstone Books imprint.
